Enable them to death.

It breaks my heart to work with student after student who is enabled to death by parents. Parents are so sure I spend my time sitting in my office plotting against their child... oh, to have that much time... Pa-leese.

When I was doing my special ed work in college, I often remember something my primary instructor often said: "If you're contemplating going into special ed, you need to know clearly your tolerance for failure. There is a low level of success in special ed."

I suppose the same could be said for the population you work with. It sounds like the very nature of your job is to work with problem students. They aren't special ed, but their upbringing sure gives them their own handicaps.

Too bad your first contact with the parents is when there's a problem. You're so good with people, I bet if you could develop a relationship with them ahead of time, they'd be receptive to you when there's a problem. (Just where are the extra hours of the day to do such a thing, she asks. But it would be ideal.)
